Today year 3 and 4 were treated to a performance by the teachers from the Redbridge music school. They performed as a brass quintet.

We learnt all about the different parts of the brass instruments.

Last week we carried out our termly attendance assembly and were pleased to see so many children achieve their 100% attendance awards.
Congratulations to 4NH and 2LH who had the best attendance for the Autumn Term. They received the Attendance cups in assembly.

Puppet Challenge:

At the end of last year, some children from Nightingale were part of the Puppet Challenge. After we arrived at our destination at St.Augustine's school, we had the opportunity to make a puppet of 'Captain Communication.'

We worked well in teams and performed a play which was a lot of fun.

Road Safety in Key Stage 1

The children were visited by Ms Cray from the Redbridge Road Safety Team.

We learnt how to safely cross the road and we learnt how to listen for any dangers on the road.

TAG RUGBY:
At the end of last half term, a new tag rugby team was put together.
The children entered a festival at Eton Manor and represented the school really well. Although Nightingale weren't placed, they did incredibly well for a first effort. We hope to continue to train the team for further competitions.

SPEEDSTACKS:
We are joining the World Speedstacking association's wrold record attempt on 17th November (Years 4, 5 & 6).

SWIMMING:
We would like to wish 'good luck' to all those children who are partcipating in the RSSA Swimming Gala on 17th November (Years 5 & 6).

One World Competition

To celebrate One World Week (24-28 October) all children from Nightingale entered a competition organised by Redbridge. They were asked to design a poster to raise awareness about how to care for the environment. Some children chose to design a poster promoting recycling; others chose to focus their poster on encouraging children to walk to school. The judges commented that all entries were outstanding and imaginative and it was a hard decision to choose the winners. There were four winners from Nightingale:
Molly in 5SM, (overall winner)
Sienha in 2KB, Maria Poli in 6NO and Edith Sizer in 6NO
Winners will receive a kit for the school consisting of eco-friendly goodies.
There were also several runners-up who will receive a pencil made from recycled newspaper.
There will be a special assembly in the coming week where all winners and runners up will receive their certificates and prizes.
Well done to all the children who took part.
Thank you to Miss Sanders for organising the competition.

Poetry in Motion Competition

Congratualtions to all the children who took part in the Poetry In Motion Competition which was run by Redbridge. The children wrote about their journey to school, using a range of exciting descriptions.

Stegosaurus Science in Year 4

Year 4 were lucky enough to take part in a video conference with the Natural History Museum, to talk live with a Palaeontologist. We learnt about the Stegosaurus and thought about what its plates could have been used for. We also asked some questions.

This week, the Year 5 & 6 children were lucky enough to watch the Sky Theatre's performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.'

Netball Rally

Nightingale entered two teams in the Redbridge Netball Rally.
The blue team played really well and drew some of their matches. The maroon team won all their matches and qualified for the semi finals where they beat Woodford Green Prep 9-1. In the final, the team was narrowly beaten by bancroft A 5-4. This was the first match they have lost all year.
Overall, it has been an outstanding result for netball in Nightingale Primary School with the teams winning a total of 5 trophies.

The Nightingale High 5 team won the East London High 5 tournament.
They beat 11 schools who were the winners of their school's partnership competitions. The trophy was presented to them by the England netball captain.
The team was: Louisa Gibson, Madeline Oshodi, Warshika Gopikrishna, Alona Cirkina, Sophie Culver, Brandon Weir, Harsh Kumar and Temisan Karim.
This team has now won every competition they have entered and they are unbeaten.

The Olympics Creativity Project at Nightingale

Last week, the children from Years 5 & 6 led a colourful display of creativity at school. The project was based on the Olympic theme of friendship. A dancer worked with some children to create an incredible 'figurative' dance sequence which told a story about the 'superheroes' of friendship. All classes made items and displayed them in a carnival parade. Well done to all performers and well done to classes who made some incredible props and costumes.

Well done to all the participants in the Redbridge Mini-Games athletics, netball and football teams. The netball team won the shield yet again - The Hi-Five team beat Bancroft in the final 11-0. The Nightingale Hi Five team have won the Redbridge league, winning all their matches.
Well done to the team.

The Nightingale netball team were invited to attend the Bancroft netball tournament. 20 schools played in the tournament and the standard of netball was very high. The team won all their matches and drew against Bancroft A team. They came second, losing out on goal difference.

RED NOSE DAY 2011

Red Nose Day was a lot of fun for the children at Nightingale. We had fun dressing in red, wearing funny hair, wearing funny hats, cooking and creating extra fun in our art lessons.

We even told funny jokes in assembly.

Thank you once again to all parents and children for donating items for the 'Recycle 2 School' scheme. The items were gratefully received and will be distributed soon, by the charity.
1290kgs were collected in total, helping to also raise £387 for the school, which was given to us by the charity.

Nightingale Girls Football team

Congratulations to the girls football team who have won a recent competition against a very difficult opposition. The girls won by 2 clear goals by the end of the competition.

They are now the Essex girls champions and will be representing Essex against the other counties of the South east of England.

Nightingale Meets Father Christmas

This week Year 1 and Reception where lucky enough to meet up with Father Christmas via Video Conference.

Father Christmas talked to the children about where he went on holiday this year which looked quite exciting, he liked the cold places best.

Then the children asked him some questions. We has some great ideas from year 1 which included how does his reindeer fly and how doe he get round the whole world in one night.

Then the children sung a song.

It was a great time and the children where all very excited.

Last week, both Key Stages held a special attendance assembly to congratulate the class for the best class attendance this year. Many of the children (from all classes) throughout the school received '100% attendance' stickers.

The classes with the best attendance from the Infants was 2LL and from the Junior class was 6LO - well done and keep it up for this half term!!

We had an exciting day on Friday as we dressed up for Children in Need.

We followed the theme of 'Wear Spots! Raise Lots!' There was a sea of red and yellow in the school hall. Many children even designed their own outfits which were very imaginative.

Thank you very much to all those who filled the 'Pudsey bears' at school as we raised a superb £560 which will be sent to the Children in Need charities.

Congratulations to the netball and football teams for their recent success since starting the Autumn term.
The netball team had an INCREDIBLE WIN against Bancroft B team (15-1) and a fantastic 12-1 win against Chigwell school.
The High-5 netball team played very well against Churchfields school, as they won 7-1The children have to play as shooter, defender and a centre. Well done to Harsh and Brandon who represented the team extremely well.

A fantastic win for the football team who won 5-3 against Our Lady of Lourdes. Bella was the player of the match.

Creativity Weeks

During the first two weeks back after half term, the Foundation Stage, KS 1 and KS 2 took part in a range of exciting activities as part of the Creativity Week theme "Around the World in 5 days!"

The children enjoyed specially prepared drama, singing and extra art lessons. There were numerous visitors to the school, including Ilford Ursuline Gospel Choir who delivered a stunning assembly performance then sang with some of the classes as part of a workshop. We were also lucky enough to work with an artist as well as an art historian who taught us plenty about painting styles around the world. The children had the opportunity to taste food from a range of cultures, and shared their work in a special assembly at the end of the week.

Yr 4 athletics

Eight children accompanied Mr. Hawkins to the year 4 athletics competition at Ashton Playing Fields. The whole squad perfromed admirably, with some individual successes, notably in girls' 50 metre sprints. The school finished narrowly outside the top3 out of 10 schools.

Yr 5 LBR netball trials

Last week five of our Y5 girls tried out for the LBR netball squad for next year. There was fierce competition, and three of our girls were successful: Madeline Oshodi, Aljona Cirkina, Louisa Gibson.

Two girls narrowly missed out, very unlucky and well done for trying. maybe next time: Sophie and Rachel Culver.

London mini-games

One of our Y6 pupils, Jake O'Neill, has been selected from 30 other pupils to represent LBR at the London mini-games for football. This event will be held at Crystal Palace. Excellent achievement, well done to him.

Football: King's Cup semi-final

Our school football team has reached the final of the Kingh's Cup (the most important and historic 11-a-side competition in LBR primary schools' football). On Tuesday 22nd June they beat a strong Fairlop team on their own pitch 7-4. Excellent stuff boys, bring on St. Anthony's in the final! (Squad as usual)

Football: girls 5-a-side

It has been a year of unprecedented success for our girls football team, which is almost wholly composed of Y5 pupils.

We have taken part in four tournaments, playing mainly against Y6, in the South west Essex Chhampionships. In all 4 tournaments our big rivals have been selwyn school. In 3 previous finals we have lost 1 and won 2 against Selwyn. On Wednesday 23rd June we reached the final yet again, beating various teams by scores such as 7-0, 4-0 etc. We lost the final (Selwyn again!) 3-0, but won the overall Championship spanning over the 4 tournaments as we had only ever lost 2 games!

Well done girls, the trophy is in the cabinet.

Great news- we were informed yesterday, 25th May, that we are league champions! Redbridge schools are organised into mini-leagues based mainly on locality for each season, and after losing only one game, Nightingale primary School has been announced as champions of our league. This is an excellent effort, rewarding consistent success over a season.

Massive congratulations to the squad and Mr. Hawkins, who has put so much into the team this year. Furthermore, all the best of luck boys for our upcoming Cup semi-final against Fairlop Primary! Who knows- maybe we could add another trophy to the cabinet- it's getting crowded in there!

Young Writers award

Recently some of our Y6 pupils entered a creative writing competition, entitled "Mini sagas". The competition was run by the "Young Writers" company, who have been publishing work by children for over twenty years.

The winning children will have their stories published in a book called "Tiny Treasures London & The South of England", which is due for publication on 31st August 2010. A copy will be kept at the British Library, so the children's work will go down in history!

The super-talented winners (with the title of their story in brackets) were: Olivia Browning (Decisions), Agshaya Perinbanathan (The Beach), Tayszea Lai (My Sister Kate), Jasmine Bonsu-Hefford (Running Away), Laura Carlisle (My Secret Present) and Jessie Bosher (House).

Up and coming Y5 netballers

On Saturday 15th May, Mrs. Oshodi took a Y5 netball team to a Redbridge tournament. The team had some experienced players, but it was also the first time some of the squad had played competitively.

Mrs. Oshodi had said that the aim was to try to win one game, and then see- well that was certainly achieved, as the team won plenty of games, including matches against traditional strong rivals Woodford Green Prep and Park School.

The team progressed all the way to the grand final, losing narrowly to Bancroft's 2-1, the victims of a last-minute goal.

Sporting success continues

On Tuesday 27th April Mrs. Oshodi and Mrs. Rosen took two netball teams to the annual Redbridge netball rally, probably the biggest competition the team enters all year.

Both teams played superbly, the developing Blue team winning two matches and competing well in the other three, so this bodes well for the 2010/11 season!

The Maroon team won all their matches and played the very strong Park school in the semi-final. The result, after extra time, was 3-3, but the team progressed to the final on goal difference.

The final was against Bancroft "A", another very difficult class of opposition. It was a close, tense match, but the girls prevailed, winning 5-4 to bring back their FOURTH trophy of the year! Well done to all the squad (pictured) and Mrs. Rosen and Mrs. Oshodi, netball coaches extraordinaire!

Redbridge Mini Games, 28th April

On Wednesday 28th April, Mr Hawkins, Mrs Oshodi, Mrs Ransome and Mrs Lingard accompanied our football, netball and indoor athletics teams to the Redbridge mini-games at Redbridge Sports centre.

It was a brilliant, but long and tough day. The athletics team performed highly creditably, finishing 9th out of 20 schools, despite a couple of injury problems meaning that late-notice call-ups were required!

The football team (pictured) did fantastically well, especially bearing in mind that in recent years, we have not progressed past the group stages. This year we negotaited the group well, winning two and drawing two matches. We won a narrow quarter-final on penalties, thanks to our hero 'keeper George, and beat an excellent side in the semi-final 1-0. The final proved to be one match too far, and despite a rousing performance we went down 2-0. The team only conceded 3 goals on their way to the final, and to finish runners-up was a magnificent achievement.

By now you may well have guessed... the netball team won the netball section, beating all opposition including a 9-1 victory over Mossford Green in the final! The trophy was presented to the team by the Mayor of Redbridge.

The team this year has won all the tournaments they have entered, earning FIVE trophies which are all on display in the trophy cabinet in the office foyer. This has been an amazingly successful year for the netball team, and for Nightingale sport in general.

Governor tribute

You may remember that sadly, last year, our Chair of the Governing Body Councillor Allan Burgess passed away.

Councillor Burgess had been the Chair of Governors for many years and had provided great service to both Nightingale Primary School and Aldersbrook Primary, where he was also Chair of Governors. He was well known in the local area, and worked very hard to achieve improvements in the Wanstead and South Woodford areas, to which he was deeply committed.

As a tribute to Councillor Burgess a tree has been planted at the front of the school, with a stone plaque to commemorate his great service to our school.

"Walk on Wednesdays" competition winners

The Junior children recently took part in the Walk on Wednesday (WoW) competition to design a badge.

Walk on Wednesday is scheme designed to encourage children to walk to school. This has benefits for fitness, the environment and congestion in the mornings around school, as cars are used less.

Even if you live too far away from school to walk the whole way, you can still get involved: park the car 5-10 minutes walk away from school (parking should be easier as well!) and walk the rest of the way. Or, get off the bus a stop early!

The three lucky winners received a goody-bag selection including a t-shirt, frisbee, pencil case etc and they were:

More netball silverware!

The Nightingale High 5 netball team has landed two trophies this week (w/b 19th April) to add to the already crowded trophy cabinet!

On Tuesday 20th April the team won a High 5 tournament in competition with 9 other local area schools. They won all the matches they played and, as usual, represented the school superbly.

The squad for this tournament was as follows:
Jessica Carlisle, Laura Carlisle, Hollie Wright, Madeline Oshodi, Natashya Holder and Olivia Browning.

The High 5 team ALSO secured the league trophy, having competed in many league games over the last two terms (see previous netball posts). This is a fantastic effort, squad is as follows:

Jessica Carlisle, Laura Carlisle, Hollie Wright, Jasmine Bonsu-Hefford, Madeline Oshodi, Tyler Larbi and Hassan Khan.

It has been a brilliant season for the netball team; congratulations to all the players named above and many thanks to Mrs Rosen and Mrs Oshodi for all their hard work and dedication.

Junk Orchestra play for the Mayor

On Thursday 1st April Nightingale hosted an outdoor concert in the lower junior playground. Among those attending were The Worshipful The Mayor of Redbridge and Madam Mayoress.

The concert was the culmination of a seven-day project called the "Junk Orchestra". Children from the juniors have had the chance during this project to play and make percussion and wind instruments out of household and industrial waste, proving that great things can be done with what might be seen as rubbish! Almost the whole school were able to attend, with years 1 to 6 making up the audience. Indeed, years 1 and 2 made and played their own shakers along with the orchestra!

This musical project coincided with a environmental awareness project run by the school council whereby children designed and made t-shirts with "green" slogans on them. They looked fantastic, and were able to articulate their important message to the Mayor.

Well done to all involved- it was a really effective and important project, bringing the curriculum to life in a special way and highlighting the vital message of conservation for the children and adults involved.

The Mayor even try his hand at conducting the Orchestra and then stayed and answered some questions.

Great attendance

We had our termly Attendance Award assembly on Tuesday 30th March. Many children (far too many to list here!) achieved attendance award stickers, either "100% attendance"* for the Spring term, or "Good attendance" stickers, if their attendance was over 95%. Well done to all those children, and thank you to parents who have made sure their children are in school regularly.

In Key Stage 2, the class with the best attendance was 5OF, with 3FP a close second. This reverses the situation of the Autumn term, when 3FP won and 5OF were second. Well done to those two classes, and a big "Come on!" to all the other classes- can any of you bet 5OF and 3FP?
In Key Stage 1, 2SH had the best attendance, well done to them.

Please continue to ensure your child is in school whenever they are physically fit enough to be, it is vital for their education. Thank you.

* 100% stickers given to all children who had no absences, and also children who had missed just 1 or 2 half days during the term.

Girls football success!

Hot on the heels of our netballers, the girls' football team brought home the silverware from the district 6-a-side tournament they entered on Thursday 25th March.

They won all their games, with scores such as 9-0 and 10-0, then shaded a close final 3-2 against Selwyn school, whom we had beaten in the last tournament, and lost to in the tournament before that.

So we retained the trophy, and congratulations goes to the coach Mr. Hawkins and his team. Squad to follow.

Amazing netballers!

On Wednesday 24th March, Mrs. Oshodi and Mrs. Rosen took their intrepid squad of netballers to a tournament at Bancroft's Prep School.

There were twenty-three other teams in the tournament, and the standard of netball was very high. The girls played, and won, all eight games including a 4-0 victory in the final over Woodford Green Prep School.

The team returned to school with their medals, the shield and big smiles all over their faces! Their effort, commitment and attitude was top-notch all afternoon- no surprise, as they always represent Nightingale in such a positive way.

ICT themed presentation

We are currently investigating the possibilty of running the ICT event as a morning slot in school time, and will publicise the date as soon as it is confirmed.The session comprises three elements:

e-safety
Managed learning environments (MLE)
Home access

It was extremely well received when run as an evening session, so we would like to encourage as many as possible to attend the re-run morning slot. Date TBA.

Update- it has unfortunately proved impossible to schedule this before the Easter break, so this event will now be re-run after Easter, on Tuesday April 27th at 9.10am in the KS2 hall.

Wanstead Library Display

On Wednesday 17th March, Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Ransome and Mrs. Lingard took a group of
musically talented Nightingale pupils to the Royal Albert Hall.

The event was the bi-annual Redbridge schools' festival- an evening of choral singing, orchestral performances and ....FUN!
The pupils had shown great commitment attending all the practices and rehearsals, and represented the school in an excellent fashion. Thank you and well done to you all.
Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Lingard both worked really hard preparing the pupils for the evening. Our appreciation of the brilliant efforts is noted- thank you!

Nightingale Primary judged "outstanding" by Ofsted

You should have now received the Ofsted report from the inspection conducted on February 4th and 5th.

We hope you are as proud of the "outstanding" judgement as we are! Under the new inspection framework commenced in September 2009, only about 6% of over 1,500 primary schools inspected have achieved this outcome.

As you will see, the only area to improve was pupil attendance, so we hope to work closely with you to ensure that this area soon becomes a strength of the school.

More netball victories!

The amazing school netball team played another two matches on Tuesday 9th March. According to coach Mrs. Oshodi, they put in two of their most accomplished performances to date, playing some sublime netball against a couple of good sides.

Ofsted report

We have now received the final, validated version of the Ofsted report. It will be sent home to all parents and carers on Wednesday 10th March.

In addition children will each receive a copy of a letter written personally by the lead inspector thanking them for their hard work and welcoming natures.

World Book Day events at NPS...

We ran our annual "Book Week" event on the during the week of 1st-5th March.
Lots of great activities took place, the highlight being the character parade on Friday.
As you can see, the response from pupils and staff was fantastic- the range of costumes was amazing, as good, if not better than, ever! We hope you enjoyed being part of the costume-making process, and enjoyed the parade if you were able to attend.
On Thursday 4th, professional poet Roger Stevens took assemblies for KS1 & 2, and spent the afternoon working with year 3. Roger's brand of fun and serious writing went down superbly- the response of the children at his book signing shows just how much they enjoyed the day.

Football

On Wednesday 3rd March we played Chrchfields Juniors in a home league game.

It was a hard-fought game in testing conditions, and midway through the second half we conceded a breakaway goal to go 1-0 down. Not to be denied, we fought back, earned a penalty which was dispatched by Tiwa for a 1-1 draw. That was the end of the scoring, 1-1 being regarded as a fair result overall.

Well done to the boys (squad to follow) and Mr Hawkins for the continued football success. Thanks to all parents, carers and pupils who supported the team.

Netball news!

More fantastic news from the success story that is the Nightingale Primary School netball team:

On Tuesday 3rd March we played two games, against Bancroft "A" and St. Aidan's. Both results were positive: a 7-4 victory over Bancrofts, particularly pleasing as Mrs. Oshodi rates them as very tough oposition; and a 10-1 victory over St. Aidan's.

Thanks, as always, goes to parents and carers who continue to help with transport; congratulations, as always, goes to the squad, Mrs. Oshodi and Mrs. Rosen.

ICT themed evening

We are planning an ICT-themed event for parents and carers on Tuesday 9th March. It will commence at 6.00 p.m. in the Junior Hall.

The aims of the presentation are threefold:

• e-safety
Giving valuable advice on how to keep your children safe on the internet, including use of social networking sites, such as facebook;

• Managed Learning Environment (MLE)
Our exciting new project setting up a “virtual school” to give home access to school resources and activities;

Also, thank you for spending so much money at the book sale- this raised £160 for the school to spend on books, and Mrs. Wilder was able to choose plenty of books across the whole age range of the school.
